Wellllllll you'd probably have to put a time disclaimer on that. We have population growth after-all. It's not exponential but it is there. Have we ever had more than 2 in the past? I remember 3 guys, foodtown, big fresh.... But no idea about the ownership models if we ever had more than 2 separate grocery store entities.

We used to have 3 big grocery chains before 2002.

"Progressive owns the Foodtown, Countdown and 3 Guys chains, while its target, the 83-store Woolworths group, includes Woolworths, Big Fresh and Price Chopper."

Note that the 'Woolworths group' referred to in this article was not related 'Australian Woolworths' which now owns the 'Countdown' brand and has been rebranding all the 'Countdown' stores in NZ to 'Woolworths'.

Very harsh assessment, most companies/entities prefer not to own the buildings, I heard that fonterra does not own their head office building in the viaduct
Yah, but they certainly own the buildings where the actual money gets made.

Noel Leeming being taken to the cleaners by JB HiFi

JB Hi-Fi's push to increase the size of its footprint in New Zealand has helped assuage a group-wide sales decline. At market open on Monday, the Australia-based technology retailer told the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) that NZ sales grew 12.3% to $327.9 million in the year to June 30.

The company reported sales across all divisions, which include JB Hi-Fi Australia and The Good Guys, declined 0.4% to A$9.6 billion (NZ$10.5b). The NZ sales boost is in large part due to the company opening five new stores – three standard and two airport stores – in the financial year.

Comparable sales, which removes the sales from new stores, were up just 1.6% year-on-year, bouncing back from a first-half decline.

The warehouse appears to struggling against K Mart and Noel Leeming is struggling against JB-hifi. At least we can still beat the Aussies at rugby.

    Good coverage.

one orders why WHS doesn’t offer a Costco like grocery product (not the membership model, but the buy-in-bulk-cheap of basic grocery products model) instead of trying to go for the full grocery experience.

Most people I think dont go out of their way to buy one or two grocery items advertised cheaper at the WHS if they can’t also do the rest of their weekly grocery shopping there at the same time (the inconvenience & time factor of having to make two stops nullifies any saving of a dollar or two), but I can see people going out of their way once a month or so to get a big discount on items they can buy in bulk and get a considerable $5-$10 saving on.

Coctcos most popular product in the USA is apparently toilet paper, if that gives you some idea. Which I find easy to believe considering at Woolworths or New World it is usually close to $10 per pack for decent toilet paper (the type that doesn’t disintegrate instantly or feel like sandpaper).
