His brand of masculinity is another reason for Trump’s appeal for his supporters.

Trump’s brand of masculinity has been that of an aggressor and open bully. They see Trump as a hypermasculine father protector figure.
The allure of masculinity resonates with men in particular during times of turmoil or cultural shifts that empower women, underrepresented racial groups and the working class.

Trump's supporters view him as a strong, dominant figure who projects power and toughness. They admire his aggressive, unapologetic style and see it as a sign of authentic masculinity. His refusal to back down or apologize, even in the face of criticism, is interpreted as strength by his base.

Many Trump supporters appreciate his willingness to defy modern conventions around how men and women should behave. They see him as pushing back against what they perceive as an overly "soft and feminine" society. His brash, politically incorrect statements are viewed as refreshingly honest and masculine by his supporters.

Trump is seen by his base as a strong protector who will defend traditional values and fight for his supporters. His aggressive rhetoric toward perceived enemies, both foreign and domestic, reinforces this image of a masculine defender.
Trump's business background and wealth contribute to his image of masculine success in his supporters' eyes. His lavish lifestyle and claims of deal-making prowess align with traditional notions of male achievement.

Trump's supporters often view him as more masculine than his political rivals. His tendency to mock and belittle opponents is seen as demonstrating dominance. The contrast between Trump's brash style and more measured approaches from other politicians reinforces his masculine image to his base.

While these traits are admired by Trump's supporters, critics argue that this version of masculinity is toxic and harmful. However, for a significant portion of Trump's base, particularly working-class white men, this aggressive form of masculinity strongly resonates and drives their support.

So true, it's about the vibe. No longer is it about self-sacrafice and providing for kids. It's proving you're superior by shouting, having a loud voice, waving arms about in a dominant display and running over people. If you win something, then someone else must lose.

But what has often been missed about Trump rallies and about the emotional effect Trump exerts on many of his supporters more generally is the sense of enjoyment and thrill he evokes.

Authoritarian leaders make their followers feel good by repeatedly and forcefully proclaiming that the latter are good people, and that their enemies are bad.

What psychologists call “the authoritarian personality” is a set of beliefs and values that people who are attracted to authoritarian leaders readily endorse. They include strict adherence to the conventional norms of the (good) in group, submission to (and adoration of) authorities who personify or reinforce those norms and antipathy — to the point of hatred and aggression — for those who either challenge in group norms or exist outside of them (“bad” out groups, who are often demonized or dehumanized).

As Trump doubles down on fascist rhetoric and threatens to take on the role of America’s first dictator, he will continue to win support from those followers who welcome the authoritarian embrace.

Attempting to convince hardcore Trump supporters that their hero is a dangerous authoritarian is an exercise in futility because they know — it’s why they like him.
