I realise that, they will from what I understand will be picking away at the quartz vein and following that for now.

I remember visiting a real old guy in Dunedin hospital with my father way back, say late eighties.

This always stuck in my head. They were talking about the Macraes mine. The old timer said 'they are wasting their time as we got every ounce of gold out of that mine'.

So, who knows until you start digging and processing.

On the Stuff web news this afternoon there is a very interesting news article if someone can post.

The Ohinemuri River in the Karangahake Gorge turns ORANGE ( photos supplied ) I truly hope that this is not the work of the anti mining nutters who have a history of trying to stop the NTL 's restart !

Senior Incident Response Officer Robert Isaac said worst case scenario is the discoloured water was due to a mine shaft collapse, and old mines contain many heavy metals and contaminants.

There are alot of old mines up there. It is scary to think protestors could have contaminated the river themselves just to make a point. But it is possible although it would be worse if it was NTL mine collapse.

Hopefully it is the other possibility of a collapsed forestry dam.

That is an incredibly bright orange.
Not sure a forestry dam would have this impact?
It looks like iron oxide contamination and could contain high levels of other minerals / metals.

Similar discoloration has happened in Canada as perma frost melts and exposes minerals that have been locked away for 1000s of years.

The Ok Tedi mine disaster in Papau New Guinea had dam leaks into rivers that looked similar to this, although this is a much brighter orange.

It's also the same colour as the river that runs through Queenstown, Tasmania, from decades of mining in the area. Hopefully something can be done to stop this discharge quickly.

Seems the council has located the source.

"An old mining shaft has been confirmed as the cause behind turning the Ohinemuri River bright orange yesterday, the Waikato Regional Council says.Regional compliance manager Patrick Lynch said the sediment appeared to have been shifted from an old mining asset in the hills above the Karangahake Gorge car park, and the flow of water coming from the shaft was now running relatively clear."
