But in reality they have no substance and should fade away

Thanks, I knew this was quite likely to be your answer. I feel similarly about shorting and option contracts in general. What happened with Gamestop was certainly crazy and even today it trades 24x higher than it did in 2020.

I'll take a look into what happened to Daniel Gladis during the GFC since I'm unaware of what happened there.

Val N Z, If you read this Ive tried to google Daniel Gladis re the GFC situation but it only comes up with his book and lecture info is there any info/link re what happened re the GFC ?

Not sure it is apt to describe this circumstance as a "disaster". It seems to simply hinge on whether the matter was sufficently material to warrant a market announcement in the first place. I would have thought it was but you could argue otherwise. And anyway, the issue had apparently already been resolved on normal commercial terms in a timely fashion.
