The repeal of Section 7AA of the Oranga Tamariki Act was front and centre at Parliament this week, with former Minister in charge of the legislation Tracey Martin telling the government to rethink its approach.

After the mammoth Abuse in Care report, she and many other voices are calling for 7AA to remain.

Reports and studies over the years have outlined how the state child protection service had been failing Māori especially. Section 7AA was added to the Oranga Tamariki Act in 2019 to directly address this harm.

The Royal Commission into Abuse in Care's report delivered to Parliament two weeks ago also highlights the importance of cultural connection in preventing harm, and Martin is adamant National should push back against the coalition agreement.

"If Māori are able to use their cultural norms to ... protect children, why is there an assumption that they would do worse than we [Pākehā] have? Because look at the Royal Commission - we haven't done very well, have we?"

4.6% unemployment under this govt... shame.

They are bashing beneficiaries at the same time due to their own failures and policies. At least have some mercy and give them a free ticket Aust if they aren't up to improving NZ in a meaningful way.

Chhour said Tākai is an in-house service provided by Oranga Tamariki, which is taking resources away from its core purpose – the front line.
Seems to me that Takai was a fence at the top of the cliff, and Chhour thinks Oranga Tamariki should only be the ambulance at the bottom of the cliff.

Outcry over closure of online parenting resource hub Tākai

Whānau support workers are pushing back over the closure of Tākai – an online parenting resource hub for those working with families.
The platform, known as Skip (Strategies with Kids | Information for Parents) when founded in 2004, is due to close today.
In a statement posted online last week, Tākai said its website, learning platform and parenting resources will no longer be accessible. Its community initiative funding will also close.

The decision to cease operations follows a request from Children’s Minister Karen Chhour for Oranga Tamariki to properly assess the hundreds of service provider contracts being reviewed.

Chhour said that for too many years Oranga Tamariki has been the cash cow for community service providers who say they will provide – then don’t.

However, many in the whānau and children support sector say this is not the case when it comes to Tākai.

Chief Children’s Commissioner Claire Achmad has called for the resources to be preserved in some capacity, and has gone directly to Oranga Tamariki to request this so the investment isn’t lost.
Achmad added that Tākai’s multi-culturally informed lens is needed by frontline professionals including early childhood education (ECE) teachers and Plunket kaimahi.

“We don’t want to be taking away these trusted sources, when we actually know we need to be doing more to prevent harm.

But have they ? Isn't the unacceptable number of little kids being beaten to death every year in NZ, the main reason for this change ? This includes little kids that were removed from caring long term foster parents from a different culture and placed back with the families that had beaten them to pulp in the past, for "cultural reasons". A totally shameful situation for NZ.
The repeal of 7AA doesn't stop anyone being placed within their cultural background but it removes the need for that to be the main priority.

Can you provide some evidence of this ludicrous claim ?
