An interesting American item on the “Dog Whistle” term “woke”.

Here's John Cleese on the history of being 'woke'. It's a term like being a Greenie that has become derogatory because you care about the environment. So something good has become something bad or embarrassing. I get there are times when people can be overly sensitive or lack humour and where the line is, is subjective.
But racism & misogyny to me are well beyond the pale.

And 'snowflake' another widely used derogatory term. Interestingly Cleese is more negative on woke than snowfkakes, whereas quite often they can be one in the same. Typically I find it's the person throwing the accusation that has run out of argument so resorts to what they think is an insult.

Do-gooder is another term which you would think would be a positive description but is mostly used in a derogatory manner.

Yep, I heard my old man use that term not long ago & I challenged him on it, asking what he meant by do-gooder and he was a bit flummoxed

"Greenie" has not become derogatory because people care about the environment. It has become a joke because the people branded as Greenies are out of touch with reality.

Nope, I remember when phrases like tree hugger & Greenie became an insult in the 80s.

Your interpretation has nothing to do with the Green movement, I.e. it's become lazy term for anyone & anything a bit like woke and that's probably now considered woke. I.e caring about something.

I've been thinking what you wrote about being out of touch with reality.

The irony is the Green movement is very much in touch with reality, the reality that we as humans are living unsustainably on a planet with finite resources and poisoning the very things that sustain us and all life. I.e water and the atmosphere etc.

It's humanity that needs to adjust to this reality, not the other way around.

Yep. My parents sometimes still refer to treehuggers, hippies, flower power, and “airy fairy” I think they more or less refer to the same concepts. Ironic when over the years they themselves have shifted more and more to what they would have called treehugging back in the 80’s!

For those that are incapable of understanding the woke left phrase, pay close attention to the November election outcome. All will be clarified.
