Unfortunately not when it counted (vs germany).
NZ took rather a leading position at the time.

Britain, Australia, Canada and the opposition National party were critical of Savage for his stance".
The US was in a similar mindset back then. The world needs the US to be world police I think but not to overdo it, and have a plan to actually win.
