I did buy another 73K shares @ 17.8c today...

'MarsC' on HC shared a link to an interview with Tex from Jan 2020...obviously COVID-19 has disrupted a lot of things, but it is worth a watch to get a good view of how Sky TV are approaching things now. Some useful insights I thought.

Hi all. Long time listener, first time caller. I got an invite to join the sky broadband trial late last year and have been using it since January. Only good things to say! We had been having trouble with our previous broadband provider and despite various discussions with their ninjas, we weren’t getting any improvement. Got into the habit of doing speed tests and, out of curiosity, did a before and after test on the day we cut over to Sky. Upload and download speeds more than doubled and the sad state of our broadband service instantly ceased to be a household conversation topic.

Discovery trimming down to have a leaner trans-tasman machine...
Yes, Vodafone. Bit more info if you’re interested - upload and download speeds jump around a bit but with the vodafone service we were typically getting download of around 40 Mbps and upload of 20 or so. On the afternoon after cutover to sky we were getting download speed of up to 130 and upload of up to 80.
Don’t know the technical whys and wherefore behind those numbers but I do know that we got better signal in more places around the house with the new Sky service/router. My son stopped complaining about being unable to play his games, my daughter stopped complaining about dodgy streaming, and my wife stopped complaining about stilted zoom calls. Everybody happy.
From what I have been told those speeds are only guaranteed using a Ethernet cord. I go from 900mps download plugged in to 130mps using 5g wifi. Makes it feel kinda pointless having a gigabit connection really. Someone correct me if I am wrong but this is what stuff fibre customer service team have told me. Lucky for me I plug most of my devices in using Ethernet cords.
The top speeds advertised are always theoretical. In actual practice you will see lower speeds, especially with wifi connected devices.
Then there is the issue of what your device can handle. It doesn’t matter how ‘fast’ the internet speed is - your device will only be able to process the signal at a certain speed (and that speed is a lot less than 900Gbs!).
But with Spark I have had download speeds between 400-500Gbs and Upload speeds 200Gbs+.

Are those speeds over wifi or plugged in? I can't stand Spark but heck if I could get those speeds over wifi it would tempt me to switch.
Sky's router will still never compare to a store brought router. I have the netgear night r8000. Incredible router. I am waiting on the Google nest router with 2 mesh extenders to arrive to replace the netgear as I need even more range in the house. FYI. Maybe not on special now but a 3 pack was on special for $540 which in incredible value. All if this on The Market which I'm finding is a great site.
Now I'm not quite sure what you said there 🤔. It's been out for awhile. Just way cheaper on the market than anywhere else. They have great deals on alot of items.

Not yet. I am waiting for my beard to grow out a bit more first so that I can be at my most dashing when I meet her for coffee. I want her to be putty in my hands.
I want her to be too busy thinking "God this mistaTea is an attractive man!" as I push her to reveal details that she really shouldn't...

The change in language from our CEO Sophie is a breath of fresh air compared to John Fellet who in my mind was a bit ponderous towards the end of his stewardship.
Could someone with knowledge of such matters please explain what the difference is between a Chief Customer Officer and a Chief Customer Delivery Officer?
TIA.

Just adding NEON back today via my Spark account given A Handmaid's Tale streams tonight (exclusive to NEON, not available as part of my Sky Box package).
I wondered if the Spark-NEON pricing would change too, given the recent price increase.
Currently $9.95/month but I just confirmed that from 01 June it will go up to $11.99/month.
As at the last results there were 352K streaming customers. About 41k of these were Vodafone TV 'reseller customers' (an embarrassing figure for Vodafone btw, poor design has made many Sky customers regret ditching MySky for VTV - they would rather pay the $15/month MySky fee and have a STB that does what they need it to do. VTV does have some cool features like 3 Day catch up, but overall it is pretty cr@ppy - and that is reflected in the low subscription numbers. Was a great idea, but poorly executed. No wonder IFT don't want a bar of Sky!!).
ANYWAY, I digress!
That leaves 311K streaming customers across NEON, Sky Sport NOW and RP. RP subs would have been negligible at the HY results, and I think it is fair to say that NEON is the most popular service and probably accounts for 80% of the total.
So that would be ~250K subs. Not bad at all! Those 250K are split between direct customers and Spark customers. But in both cases, the price of the sub us going up by about $2/month. 17 May for direct customers, and 1 June for Spark customers.
Sky have offered to effectively hold the price if a customer takes an annual sub for $159.99/year (a slight reduction in price to $13.33/month).
Let's be generous and assume 50K take the AP, so only 200K are impacted by the $2/month increase. And let us assume that there is not a mass exodus at as NEON is still priced in a way that represents value relative to other services like NETFLIX...
Well, 200K subs x $2/month * 12 months = ~5M extra revenue for year. That is not much relative to Sky's total revenue, but consider that the majority of that will go to the bottom line. Say, about 3.5M - which would represent a profit increase of 8-9% on what is projected for the next FY results. Obviously these additional earnings will only show up in FY22, but it shows that as the streaming base continues to increase...small tweaks and changes can start to have large impacts on Sky's underlying earnings.

Now it will be interesting to see what happens to the SKT-NZR relationship from here.
I see scenarios where it is very bad for Sky. I see scenarios where it could be very god for Sky.
Or maybe they end up somewhere in the middle?
Been thinking on how skt can move their share price up. I reckon sky should go all in on bitcoin and the likes. Either we become flush or bust by throwing 200 mill into it. Added bonus is we may all get diamond hands and the sp go to the moon with all the woke sharesies users. Would it then make skt the only listed nzx company with bitcoin that people can purchase easily? If so, we should make it the first.
Dis: hold too many...
It might be crazy enough to work. It’s already volatile enough so we may as well.

Want fit for purpose broadband to binge NETFLIX? Join SKY!
I should be Head of Marketing.
Yep a 20% increase in Neon price after just one year. I swore I'd never be a SKY customer again yet here I am - sucked in by the $9.99 offer last year (via SPK). We don't watch a lot of Neon so not sure we'll be long-term, but it was definitely one of the smarter things SKT has done in a while.
I'm doing my bit and have stayed on a NEON customer after a 3 month trial just to re-watch The Sopranos. Also have taken up the Spark+Sky Sports deal so this is going to move the share price north so much I'll get a personal congratulatory phone call from our CEO Sophie.
Where's me washboard
Yeah I think Sky are doing well getting their brand back out there in various guises. Consider the key partnerships they currently have:
Spark: Cheap NEON (even when the price goes up, $11.99/month is an absolute steal in my view for the range of content Sky put on NEON these days). Also the Sky Sport NOW/Spark Sport bundle for $49.99/month is a very compelling offer for big sport fans.
Vodafone: Much less successful, but Vodafone TV does allow people to stream all of their content and gives cheaper access to core Sky channels (no MySky fee). The STB still needs a lot of work in key UX area in my view, but it does not seem that Vodafone are spending any more money on the product. A shame, but the partnership is still there.
Vocus: Sky Broadband recently soft launched. I expect the ties between Vocus and Sky to become closer and closer over time. Not making any merger predictions here, but Sky are interested in Sky Mobile so it makes sense to leverage Vocus' capabilities here since they are providing the broadband. Vocus also offer energy bundles so it does not take much of a stretch of the imagination to see Sky soon offering mega bundles that include:
- Sky BOX or Streaming Services
- Ultra Fast Broadband
- Mobile
- Energy
Basically all of your core utilities on one convenient bill.
NZR: The recent partnership to stream SR Aotearoa on RP in core European markets not previously available to RP is a great move. Hopefully Sophie will be able to update us at the next results in terms of how well it went (or not), key learnings etc. Vision for future collaboration with NZR using RP...
I would like to see Sky get a deal with NETFLIX. Would be great to be in a position to offer NETFLIX (HD) + NEON bundle for $25/month standalone. Only $20/month if you take Broadband. Upgrade to NETFLIX Ultra 4K for +$5 if you want (like you can with Spark).
You could even offer NEON + Sky Sport NOW bundles. Or NETFLIX+NEON+Sky Sport NOW bundles.
There are so many ways customers can be rewarded for bundling, and we are really just at the beginning.
just read about Vodafone offering wifi 60gb+landline for $40 a month for gold card holder while Spark can only do 40gb+landline for $45 a month, looks like competition is heating up

NEW JOB LISTING AT DISCOVERY SINGAPORE:

SET TOP BOX?
https://i.imgur.com/IUB28Az.jpg
Will Discovery buy Sky for it's ~1m customers and then upgrade the old "Sky set-top box" with a new "Discovery set top box" so they can stream their content direct to NZ consumers?
Thoughts?
They are planning to build a STB that can be used in all of the territories that they have direct-to-consumer access? In no way, shape or form does this increase the likelihood of a SKT.NZ takeover?
We have been through this mate, Discovery do not want or need Sky TV. They would have purchased Sky by now if they did. Discovery are in a sweet spot right now, they still get a guaranteed income from Sky every month, but with a co-exclusive deal so they can put more of their content on TV3 and increase ad revenue. Discovery do not need to fork out $500M+ to buy Sky when the deal they have already is pretty sweet.
Like Elsa once said: "Let it Go".
Good to know that Discovery also see a future in a modern STB though! Sky are on the right track here with NVIDIA SHIELD!
Now, Vocus on the other hand...that screams a match made in Heaven!
Indeed.
Completely different company operating in an industry that will take many years to recover. Cinema attendance was already on the downtrend, now with Covid raging...
EBITDA for Vista was around $30M before Covid hit...one fifth of what Sky is at. Revenue also about one fifth of Sky...
Yet an investor would still happily fork out over half a billion dollars to buy Vista, but only $300M for Sky...
Something not quite adding up here!
Damn. Just read that UFC will go to Spark Sport for its PPV events. I don't like UFC but unfortunately many people do. That's a blow.
Will be available on both Sky Sport and Spark Sport moving forward.
https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/...EVR5PBKP2XKDU/
Sky no longer prepared to pony up for exclusive rights for everything. Will only fork out for exclusivity for critical content to ensure there are enough 'hooks' to differentiate their offering.
Welcome to the Real World.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXBPJ5FLqCU
So things were just booming along like never before...and Vista at its pinnacle generates EBITDA of NZ$30M? And is still worth so much more than Sky?

I'll let Ogg add in appropriate image for above...
Most people who watch these events will stick with Sky!
"But why are you so sure about that MistaTea???!"
Ahhh my children...it is very simple...
Sky have exclusive rights to the ESPN channels... and the ESPN channels show a lot of the early matches and other pre-fight entertainment. So why would i start watching the hours of preamble on Sky and then switch to Spark Sport for the main event...when I can just add it on Sky for exactly the same price?
