Not quite. . .
After the second world war, Turkiye was an integral geographic component of the Western strategy of containment. From this military integration came increasing economic integration with the West – think of the Turks who enhanced the German labour force.
And from this developed the ever-dangling prospect of Turkish EEC/EU membership, which the EU has stuffed about with for year after year after year after year until now that prospect is effectively dead.
Turkiye remained politically unstable, with frequent military interventions in government, for pretty much the second half of the twentieth century. Democracy and civil society generally do not have deep roots.
For centuries Turkiye has been a major regional power, and the current situation can be seen in a contextual mix of nostalgic nationalism, Ottoman Empire revanchism, and burgeoning economic strength.
And now, spurned or abandoned by the West, Turkiye has little choice but to look east, both politically and economically. That choice doesn’t depend on who’s in power in Turkiye – if Turkiye can’t go west there’s no alternative but to go east.
Be more democratic and go west then...... they have a choice, like everyone else.

Well, it is not the west's fault then, they have made their own choice's.
I think the west is better off without these little dictators......they are just trying to bring everyone else down to their level of "democracy". (Xi & Putin to "inject stability and positive energy into a world") Whatever.....
