What about the competitors ? Do you see pushpay gaining market share ? Or how about churches just opting to use free software / web uploads to share content rather than subscriptions during this time ?

Some people don't wish to give out their email address then getting constant spam or locating customers changing providers also unhelpful. Phone app from a specialist church donations provider falls within their budget and works as heaps of top churches shows. Churches are grateful for consistent donations collected by PPH or they would change.
Could go back to passing the hat its free then sorting the coins ...........?
I'll try to answer both BlackPeter and Cadalac123 in response. It all comes down to making things easy for both the church and its congregation. Yes, there's lots of ways people can pay a church donation. So the church can either put "Pushpay" on their big screen and ask the congregation to take out their phones and give generously, or they can hope that some people will post checks, others will give cash, or do bank transfers etc at some other time. The Church gets 5% more donations via the app and is easier to process than other methods, donations are tracked, receipts issued easily for tax time and much more. It obviously works as they're processing USD$4.2 Billion a year and growing.
Same goes for engagement with their congregation. They could engage with people using messenger, facebook, instagram etc. But with PPH it's all in one place, the same app they have for donations, specific to that Church and its congregation and comes with a bunch of features https://pushpay.com/blog/church-apps/.
yeah but the app has terrible reviews, barely ever has updates, and payments are not even through the app -- instead opens a browser to actually make the payment. There's also a lot of competition in the sector, some of which having much lower subscription fees.

"This is a great app on Android because you can make payments in the app. On the iPhone it opens in safari (defeats the purpose of the app). Hope that this can be rectified."
Little strange they didn't integrate it for iPhones
Secondly, do their competitors e.g. tithely have the same issues? Regardless, they've been growing which is amazing if these issues are being experienced by the customer base -
Looking at tithely website - 6,172 churches joined in the last 30 days. Geez that's a big number.. wonder if PPH has been pulling in that many new customers.
Historically Apple has prevented donation apps from processing the transaction within the app. You had to take the customer out to a safari page to complete the transaction. This is why Pushpay has historically sent customers to a web page to complete the payment. I'd challenge you to set up Pushpay, make a donation (there are a number of NZ charities on there), and then make a second donation. The speed and ease of making that subsequent payment is part of the special sauce. You can make a donation within a handful of seconds when you're all set up. Giving is a very emotive experience and when you're inspired to give, you want that to be extremely simple. Pushpay is excellent at this.
With regards to the lack of updates, Pushpay's strategy for a long time now has been to push the branded church apps and drive giving through those. I would suggest that very little giving happens through the core Pushpay platform versus in the branded church apps. Additionally, the act of Giving is the pointy end of the platform. It's the donor management, reporting, forecasting, tax handling that sits behind that and is delivered via their web portals that really power the platform. The lack of updates of the core Pushpay app is a very poor proxy for business or product performance.
$4.47 off solid turnover. Some people are picking it's going to be a good result next week.
Tithe.ly state on the front page of their site that 6,172 churches joined in the last 30 days. Pushpay?
They also show this handy comparison: https://get.tithe.ly/pushpay
Dr Weir, it would be interesting to hear your comments on this comparison.
