I learn something new every day.
NZ supermarket owners capture a full 40% of the entire value of everything sold in NZ supermarkets.
With the total revenues around 25 billion dollars, the handful of owners take home 10 billion a year between them. This FAR surpasses the total profit that all NZ banks make.
Now wonder they are on the rich list.
More surprising is that the corporate parents allow a middle man to take 40% of revenue and leave them with only 2%.
So...
If it wasn't for these handful of supermarket owners, Kiwis would have their grocery bills reduced by 40%.
I wish I had a 20 year career in investment banking so I could understand stuff like this, I had no idea.
