The U.S. and Russia currently have a total of 900 missiles and 2581 strategic nuclear warheads on high-alert, launch-ready status
Doggie is curled up in his kennel, very nervously. Talk of the use of nuclear weapons is not something I have ever feared before in my lifetime. Definitely a HUGE new block to add to the already very big wall of worry. Dow futures down nearly 550 points as I type. Hopefully that's all we have to worry about.
Can nukes launch without power?
Will be good if russia can't launch them because the silo doors wont open.
They have them in bunkers, on land transporters, on submarines, in aeroplanes. More nukes than any other country in the world. Hopefully the despot giving the orders is overridden by his henchmen's common sense that no war is won by either side when nukes are used, better maybe to save their own ass than everyone including themselves die nuking the planet.
Russia: The president, defense minister, and chief of general staff all have access to the nuclear codes. It’s unclear whether all three are required to order a launch, but the system is designed to prevent a single person from issuing the launch command. Some experts also suggest that “there are additional hurdles (i.e., more people involved)” if Russia decides to use weapons first.
Let's hope the other have sense or at least Vlad is only flexing, like he did throughout the crimea invasion
The real problem here is Vodka . They are bound to be drinking a lot more of the stuff as they cry in their borscht.

Russian tank column outside Kyiv 'is 40 miles long' – report
Satellite images taken on Monday show a Russian military convoy north of Kyiv that stretches for about 40 miles (64 km) in an area north-west of Kyiv. It is substantially longer than the 17 miles (27 km) reported earlier in the day, according to the US company Maxar, Reuters reports.

There was a very long and very slow-moving queue at a popular ATM in central Moscow yesterday with people desperate to withdraw their meagre savings in hard currency USD. One man at the back of the queue grew so frustrated he threw his hands in the air and abandoned his place declaring he was off to the Kremlin to "kill that fu$$er Putin"
However, he was back in the ATM queue inside an hour.
Everyone asked him what had happened
"The queue there is much longer"

brilliant joke..
from CNN:
Jones compared the current Russian force ratio to occupations after previous wars around the world, saying successful occupations had force ratios that were “astronomically higher.”
For example, he said:
- The Allied forces occupying Germany in 1945 had 89.3 troops to 1,000 inhabitants.
- NATO forces in Bosnia in 1995 had 17.5 troops to 1,000 inhabitants.
- NATO forces in Kosovo in 2000 had 19.3 to 1,000.
- And international forces in East Timor in 2000 had 9.8 to 1,000.

Can anybody tell me why that column of tanks and other vehicles has been allowed to sit in the same position for almost 24hrs and no attempt that we know of has been made to sabotage them or just launch an all out attack on them.If nothing is done then it makes all those Hollywood produced crap movies untrue.
Ukraine doesn't have any a-10 'tank busting' warthogs or apache helicopters. that convoy was made for the a-10 warthog!
There is plenty of behind the line attacks on supply and logistics occurring that is probably more impactful than a direct attack on the convoy itself, given the weapons the ukraine have in hand.

Not sure about your description of Putin. Putin used to be one of the KGB butchers - once a crook & murderer, always a crook & murderer. I don't find him very funny these days either. He is clearly out of his depth, but considering the arsenal of weapons he has at his avail (even if half of them seems to be out of fuel or out of maintenance or both) he is clearly dangerous.
Zelensky used to be a good comedian (which is a a tough job) ... and yes, he turned into an inspirational leader and motivator.
I guess it is true - The Ukrainians used to be not just the best soldiers in the Red army but also provided the most important politicians the Soviet empire had at its avail. Ukrainians did run the Soviet union for more than half of its time:

The Russian advance on Kyiv has “stalled” as its forces face logistical challenges, including a shortage of food for some units, according to a senior US defence official.
The official claimed the Russian advance on the Ukrainian capital remains “basically … where it was yesterday” and cited a number of possible reasons, including Ukrainian resistance.
They said it was also possible the Russians were pausing their advance by choice:
One reason why things appear to be stalled north of Kyiv is that the Russians themselves are regrouping and rethinking and trying to adjust to the challenges that they’ve had.
But the official also noted that the Russian military had shown evidence of “risk-averse” behaviour when it came to its own troops.
You’ve seen it on the ground, where units are surrendering, sometimes without a fight. And they’ve got, a lot of these soldiers are conscripts, never been in combat before, some of whom we believe weren’t even told they were going to be in combat.

the apparent difficulties the Russians are having do give me some comfort they won't invade any of the eastern NATO countries (not that I thought they were going to). If they are struggling this much with the Ukrainians, imagine the difficulty they'd have with NATO. Goes to show you the importance of effective command & control systems. And even if/when Russia does gain control of the country it will be an absolute quagmire too with resistance fighters popping off tanks and helicopters with missiles supplied from the west. I'm sure China is watching this carefully. A Chinese invasion of Taiwan by sea has got to be 100x more difficult than a land invasion across a border where you are already operating. These javelins and stingers from Europe and the drones they purchased from Turkey are phenomenally effective at expensive big Russian kit. Taiwan doesn't need to purchase any more tanks or planes - they just need loads of portable missiles and drones to become indigestible.

Russia in Swedish airspace
Sweden says four Russian fighter jets violated its airspace over the Baltic Sea.
The four aircraft, two SU-27 and two SU-24 fighters, flew briefly over Swedish airspace east of the island of Gotland, according to a statement from the Swedish Armed Forces.
"In light of the current situation we are very concerned about the incident,'' Swedish Air Force chief Carl-Johan Edstrom said. "This is unprofessional and irresponsible behavior from the Russian side."
Swedish fighter jets were scrambled and took photos of the Russian jets, the statement said.
"This shows that our readiness is good. We were in place to secure the territorial integrity and Swedish borders," Edstrom said. "We have total control of the situation."

If he can't win an election without cheating, then we can't assume there's any real amount of support he has for the war.
True, Putins situation related to the Russians is not different to Hitler's situation related to the Germans before and during WW2. Putin is a brutal dictator and his henchmen (and women?) kill any resistance in their own country as well.
Majority of Germans as well neither wanted Hitler as "Führer", nor the war nor the other atrocities this monster ordered.
Question is just - what message do you want to convey with this post - and how do you suggest to solve the problem?
Well, undermining the Russian leadership with the good ole BBC Shortwave service is a good start, might lead to regime change eventually?

As Russia is trying to cut off the flow of information in Ukraine by attacking its communications infrastructure, the British news outlet BBC is revisiting a broadcasting tactic popularized during World War II: shortwave radio.
The BBC said this week that it would use radio frequencies that can travel for long distances and be accessible on portable radios to broadcast its World Service news in English for four hours a day in Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, and in parts of Russia.
“It’s often said truth is the first casualty of war,” Tim Davie, director-general of the BBC, said in a statement. “In a conflict where disinformation and propaganda is rife, there is a clear need for factual and independent news people can trust.”
On Tuesday, Russian projectiles struck the main radio and television tower in Kyiv. Oleksii Reznikov, Ukraine’s defense minister, wrote on Twitter that Russia’s goal was “to break the resistance of the Ukrainian people and army,” starting with “a breakdown of connection” and “the spread of massive FAKE messages that the Ukrainian country leadership has agreed to give up.”
Shortwave radio has been a go-to vehicle to reach listeners in conflict zones for decades, used to deliver crackling dispatches to soldiers in the Persian Gulf war, send codes to spies in North Korea and pontificate through the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. But more modern forms of radio along with the internet eventually pushed shortwave out of favor; the BBC retired its shortwave transmissions in Europe 14 years ago.
Over the last week of February, viewership of BBC’s Ukrainian language site more than doubled from a year earlier to 3.9 million visitors, the broadcaster said on Wednesday. The BBC also provides news coverage in the country via its website, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Telegram, Viber and Espreso TV.
Millions of Russians are also turning to the BBC, the broadcaster said. The audience for the BBC’s Russian language news website reached a record 10.7 million in the past week, more than tripling its weekly average so far in 2022, the company said. Visitors to BBC’s English language website from within Russia surged 252 percent to 423,000.
Within the country, BBC also posts updates on Telegram, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. Other Western news outlets have also experienced a surge in viewership. Visits to The Guardian’s digital platforms from Russian and Ukrainian audiences were up 180 percent from January.
The BBC’s coverage has led to complaints from Russian officials. Maria Zakharova, the spokeswoman for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, said during a briefing broadcast by RT, the Kremlin-backed Russian media outlet, that Russia was the victim of “unprecedented information terrorism” that was “devoted to discrediting Russian actions” and “creating hysteria around Ukrainian events.”
The BBC “plays a determined role in undermining the Russian stability and security,” Ms. Zakharova said, without providing evidence.
One reason why you don't want to cut off the internet to russia is it provides an alternative to state media lies.
As an ex computer / telecomms security person myself, it would be interesting to see what would happen if the internet was really weaponised against Russia.
I see 'Anonymous' have been doing their bit with DDOS attacks etc, but to see it full-on targeting the power grid etc would be interesting...

Fire breaks out at Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant
A fire has broken out in Europe’s largest nuclear power plant located in Zaporizhzhya, according to an announcement from the mayor of the nearby town of Energodar.
“As a result of continuous enemy shelling of buildings and units of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is on fire,” Energodar Mayor Dmytro Orlov said on his Telegram channel, citing what he called a threat to world security. He did not give details.
Orlov recorded a short video message which has now been shared my multiple local Ukrainian media outlets, urging Russian troops to immediately stop shelling the plant.
“As a result of continuous enemy shelling of buildings and units of the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant is on fire,” Orlov said on his Telegram channel, Reuters reports.
Orlov earlier said Ukrainian forces were battling Russian troops on the city’s outskirts. and reported that a Russian military column was heading toward the nuclear plant. Loud shots and rocket fire were heard late Thursday.
According to a Telegram message posted by an employee at the plant, Russian troops fired at the nuclear facility.
“Attention! Equipment of the Russian Federation is firing at the Zaporozhye NPP. There is a real threat of nuclear danger at the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. We demand a ceasefire from heavy equipment at the Zaporozhye NPP!”
UNIAN agency also reports that a fire has started at the nuclear power plant.
The city on the Dnieper River accounts for one-quarter of the country’s power generation.
Just in from Ukraine's Foreign Minister...
"Russian army is firing from all sides upon Zaporizhzhia NPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Fire has already broke out. If it blows up, it will be 10 times larger than Chornobyl! Russians must IMMEDIATELY cease the fire, allow firefighters, establish a security zone!”

https://i.guim.co.uk/img/static/sys-...ormat&fit=max& Julian Borger
The Guardian’s Julian Borger has spoken to Mariana Budjeryn, an Ukrainian expert at the project on managing the atom at Harvard University’s Belfer Center.
Budjeryn said:
Saying that a reactor building is hit doesn’t tell us much, because the most vulnerable [part of] this is the electricity and water supply.
If the electricity is taken out, the back up generators kick in, but if those don’t kick in or their diesel fuel is set on fire, for example, the pumps can’t pump cold water into the reactor and into the spent fuel pools. That’s necessary to keep the nuclear reaction moderated. Otherwise the water will boil out and the core will go critical and explode.
If the core explodes, there’s hope that the confinement chamber will capture the radiation from release into the environment. Confinement chambers are designed with withstand some level of impact even bombing.
But of course we don’t know how they will stand to this intensity of shelling
BUT spent fuel pools - the fuel there is not as active, but they are usually overstuffed - so less active but more tightly packed material, also dangerous for going critical if the cooling system fails. And spent fuel pools are not covered by hardened concrete confinement chambers.
We learned about how vulnerable spent fuel pools are during Fukushima
The backup generators failed and the water pumping system failed - it was lucky that ocean water flooded those and the reactor cores to provide cooling.”
At present USA needs India more then other way round ...they are still trying to keep India out of Russia / China nexus ...USA needs India to counter China in case they need to sanction China too over Taiwan ....its pretty complicated story going on
But India and Russia partnership go way back ...Russia even supported India during its various wars especially 1971 when USA openly was supporting Pakistan by even moving its 7th Fleet in Indian Ocean ...
Russia supported India when it first exploded nuclear device in 1974 and one of the first to recognise India as nuclear power etc etc
S400 air defence system are considered state of art and USA doesnt want any country to have them as maybe they make some US own aircrafts and missiles vulnerable .
USA never hesitated in arming Pakistan with F16 and many more state of the art defence equipment even while keeping it on terror watch list and what not ...so for USA foreign policy or diplomacy is flip flop of that particular suitable cause to themselves .
India knows from experience which super power has better track record of real friendship not fair weather friendship USA style .
Though India is principally a Non Aligned Country which had big membership also as Non aligned movement during peak of Cold War ...but now its lost its lustre due to shine of western world ...economic prosperity attracts all so its easier to choose sides if u trying to prosper your flock . Even China took advantage of that and used western trade to prosper immensely before trying to stand on its own .
India has been put in very difficult situation by this Russian war ...and its trying its best to stay neutral but surely they are not in western camp ...
S400 system deal was done way back and now trying to raise that topic again is simply trying to remind Indian politicians that we still have a stick if u dont follow our stance ....
Iran oil was sanctioned via UN order ....They can get that flowing to counter Russian oil shortage
To me, from my limited knowledge of strategic moves especially financial ones, it is becoming clearer to me that crypto is being used to herd money into its general structure. I have long thought that the US in particular(and others) had already broken security protection and were/are tracking movements. If people are buying it on the premise that it is untrackable I suspect you are very wrong. Put it this way. Why would sanctions be imposed but some magic secret place to hide money wasn't ever touched. It is a simple trap. When that becomes more evident, well, what happens. Good luck. Your miney may not be illegit, but it doesn't matter. The demand collapse is a double edged sword, ie is it affects everyone whether they are a target or not. Let the grenade chucking start and see who doesn't put their heads down.
I think the opposite is true.
A developing Beijing-Moscow axis leaves India with a border dispute with China which is slowly verging on escalation to military action, but with Russia as a major defence supplier.
india may well flirt with the Swedish model of self-sufficiency, but how far down that path can it realistically go?
Sweden has given up on that... it going to move EU way big time and possible NATO.
India has meeting with the 3 others shortly today.
India will want to move west ward ..
The Nuclear plant is being hut down safely apparently.. Hope they put the outside fire out ..
The hacker of world are apparently going on the offensive.. be interesting to see how that plays out.

Fire at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant extinguished, officials say

At 06:20 the fire in the training building of Zaporizhzhya NPP in Energodar was extinguished. There are no victims.”

The US has a good enough pretext to go in now.
Ie to stop a nuclear disaster.
The USA "going in" will start it, do you want a nuclear war?. Haven't you figured out yet why the rest of the world hasn't militarily engaged yet, except supplying some weapons and sanctions, even the top lesser nuclear powers don't want to take on Russia because it will screw most of the world.
Scary every time Russia doesn't get its way they will threaten nuclear war........... when does the world call their bluff. We know the grip Russia had on Europe for years and thought when the wall came down everything would improve but Russia continues in their thuggery ways.
Maybe the Russian people will find a solution for maddog Putin

Out of idle curiosity. . .
what has Belarus been promised in return for being used as a springboard for the invasion?
does the glacial progress of the mammoth 40/50/60km convoy heading toward Kiev mean that the Russian military is trying to dissociate itself from the political situation?
or is the slow-moving convoy moving slowly to provide a tempting target with a view to "defensive retaliation"?
Maybe we should just put it all down to the fog of war?
Weapons will need to be delivered to georgia, moldova and other non-NATO countries prepared to stand against putin.
