How do you all research overseas markets such as US, UK, Japan, etc.

I have no problem researching NZ and AUS companies as they are all on ASB Securities. But is there free websites where it has info on all the financials of the business that I can check through quickly and easily.

I've been using Guru Focus for US stocks and Morningstar for UK stocks but there are so many advertisements and pop ups and new windows to open it makes the process very long winded.

Also, do any of you subscribe to overseas investment research or hold accounts with overseas brokers?

ENP do you know the old saying you can be a jack of all trades but a master of none. Surely two markets is enough to try & study?

I've taken the last 8 months and looked through every company on the ASX.

I individually searched and looked up their summary page showing the last 10 years of financial info for all 2000+ stocks on ASB Securities. I then got my favourite 100 or so and looked up their latest annual report and simplified this down to 20 or so. Then I went ahead and read the last 3 years of annual reports for these. Then simplified it down to 10 to 15 companies. I then researched their industries, competitors, and broker write ups on the companies, their products, services, possible future growth and sustainability. Now I have a watchlist of 9 ASX companies.

There is really not too much more that I can do with regards to the NZX or ASX that will benefit me by finding other companies. So no, I don't think that two markets is enough. I really enjoy researching and uncovering new potential investments.

Do you think Warren Buffett stopped researching potential companies and investments in his mid 20's?

I trade the London Market with Ig Markets

I do my own research.

For research I use:
http://www.investegate.co.uk/
http://www.digitallook.com/
http://www.lse.co.uk/financial-diary.asp
http://uk.advfn.com/

There are some good bloggers as well.
http://www.stockopedia.co.uk/contributors/paul-scott/

Keep very wide stops on the UK markets. It does not behave like the NZX/ASX.

I choose to trade LSE as there is better value. NZX is priced for perfection. ASX in the middle.

Good luck

Hi ENP,

How do you find Guru Focus?
Would you recommend it?
What do you like about it?
What do you dislike about it?
Why do use them for US stock rather than morning star?

I just use the free option for Guru Focus. I like it because it shows 10 years of financial data for everything I need to look at.

I think it is pretty good. I haven't ever used the paid service so don't know if this would be beneficial and I use it because it is all on the one page and morningstar seems to be on multiple pages I have to flick through to get the data I want.

Some fund managers have edge over others when they deal with frontier markets. They have their own research team in addition to their experience. Please see following link about frontier or pre-emerging" markets.

Sounds like another bubble in the making. It will end up like the Shanghai Composite - just need to work out which side of the curve you are on :-)

Yes bubble can occur in any market if market players over speculate asset prices. For example in the past we saw falling property prices and share prices in many markets including Dubai. If we analyse sector wise we had tech bubble and ended with burst. In commodity market we saw over speculation in gold, corn and soya bean etc. Now they have come down drastically. In addition we can see overvalued currencies such as AUD and NZD due to over speculation and now they are about to burst. We can see leaving hot money from these currencies now. I believe new winning sectors will emerge in Australasia due to new development in the currency market.

I believe it is time to look for undervalued markets, sectors, stocks, currencies and commodities with great potential in the mid to long term.

Globally not only gold but also corn, maize and soybean are not beautiful as before. They were really beautiful in 2012 and broke some of the all time highs. Now they are looking for bottom. We have to wait and see. I think it is time to identify next beautiful things in commodity and stock market. At different times different stocks and commodities canbecome more beautiful than others.

I believe some economies in emerging markets and frontier markets would prove resilient. Current sell off in some emerging markets create great mid and long term opportunities. Companies with strong local demand, export companies with permanent customer base and consumer staples sector in emerging world will become great winners in the future. They will earn in good times and bad times. Cyclical sectors will under-perform in the short run. As a result of slow down in some emerging markets commodity producing countries too will have some slow down in the short run.
,
We cannot ignore the strong and attractive longer term demographic and growth profile of most emerging markets, especially in Asia.

Those markets which had great rally can have correction one by one and those markets which under-performed during last couple of years will outperform others in the coming quarters. Some markets are building their base now. It is time to identify next bullish sectors, commodities, currencies and markets before others.

I believe in the short run we will see market volatility, pull back and correction in over valued markets, sectors and commodities in all types of markets such as developed, emerging and frontier markets. We saw strong bull markets in some markets including some frontier markets during last two years and they are having pull backs and correction now. Recently we saw not only sell off in stocks but also sell off in currencies and bonds. Within short period some funds can flow one country to another country and can return again. For examples if I am correct afters sell off in bonds in Australia recently some inflows returned to bond in Australia.

Now we should not forget some funds, investors and hedge funds have mountain of money after selling currencies, stocks, bonds and gold. I believe they will wait until they think this is the time to ambush the market. Where will this money go next? Definitely they will eye some of the greatest investment opportunities globally. There are some other specialised funds and investors that they like emerging and frontier markets due to their experience and knowledge in the region. Then there are some funds in emerging and pre emerging markets want to invest in developed markets and funds in developed markets want to invest in frontier and emerging world. What does it means? We will have opportunities in everywhere. They will park this money in some assets sooner than later.

As I said before it is time to identify next most bullish markets, sectors, commodities and currencies before others. We didn’t see 10% correction in some markets. I believe at least it is time to think about great rotation. New development in currency market, commodity market and other factors will benefits some sectors and companies globally in the coming quarters.

China is once again coming through with some good news. The oldest of old players, Japan is also not bad. We cannot forget South Korea as well. These three players are some of the active economic players in the world. We have got some source of stability. Frontier markets are in the initial stage of their economy and capital market developments. Some emerging markets and developed markets may have some volatility. Overall we may see gradual demand for some commodities. The trend has shifted in stock, commodity and currency market. Therefore new sectors, out of favour commodities, currencies and stocks including emerging stocks, currencies and commodities will lead markets in the coming years. Emerging markets will readjust again.

If we believe in stronger economic growth, then it is time to increase our exposure to the good commodity stocks.

As I said before I believe this is the time to identify the next most bullish markets, sectors, stocks, commodities and currencies before others.

The current environment has opportunity. We can see the extremes of undervaluation for commodity stocks and some emerging markets now.

I think that the commodity stock rally is just getting started, and they should outperform the broader stock markets at least for some selected commodities including emerging commodities.

In addition to commodity stocks, which are my favourite investment right now, some frontier and emerging markets and some sectors offer opportunity.

Some emerging market stocks trade at attractive valuations relative to developed market equities. Some Chinese Stocks And Commodity Stocks Are Bargains now.

Value orientated contrarian investors may identify cheap valuations in emerging and frontier world including Indian and Chinese equities and commodity stocks combined with extreme negative sentiment and improving fundamentals.

During last couple of days we saw lot of activities in emerging markets including Indian market. Among Asian developed market we saw lot of activities in South Korea. Tapering will benefit commodity producers in Asia.

Dow may break 16,000 and S & P 500 1800 respectively again. Up to August 2013 among frontier markets countries such as Pakistan, Bulgaria, UAE and GHANA had some of the strongest uptrend. During period of speculation on tapering not only emerging markets including India had big sold off in their currencies and stocks but also in some other markets. This situation made opportunity for intelligent players. Later emerging markets including India rebounded strongly. If I am correct while $2.1 billion exited emerging market funds between January and mid-August, frontier market funds saw inflows of $1.5 billion in the same period. If we study Frontier markets they are very much focused on internal demand other than some export such as food items including Tea, garments, fruits and spicy products and tourism. Globally some markets are toping up now.

Lists of frontier markets to watch are:

Trinidad and TobagoRomaniaSri-LankaBangladeshQatarPakistanArgentinaGhanaUAEKenya BulgariaWhich frontier markets, currencies, commodities and sectors will have strong uptrend next?
