I would start by looking at the sectors you are interested in, then sorting by size.
So if I'm interested in food, banks and health, just look at the 20-30 biggest companies in each sector? Sort of like the link below...
http://www.asx.com.au/research/pdf/health_care_sector_factsheet.pdf
And how do you make the charts stretch out more than 8-9 months?

Like in this link of Woolworths for example.

Try Stocknessmonster.com - Easy interface (a few simple options allowable like Moving averages and candlesticks) and allows charts going back 10 years

Forget sectors that interest you. Look for sectors that are doing well. Forget size. Look for companies with good prospects.

Start by familiarising yourself with the Australian market. Australian newspapers would be a good start....most are available online www.smh.com.au or www.theaustralian.com.au are the ones I read daily.
Also, The Australian Financial Review is the main business publication here- most libraries in NZ have it, even if it's a few days late.
Do you do the same sort of approach if you were investing in companies of other overseas countries (ie. USA, UK, etc)

I would start off by reading this thread first: http://www.sharetrader.co.nz/forumdisplay.php?22-The-Newbies-Corner.-The-place-for-the-Newbies-to-ShareTrader
Thanks.
The Australian online newspaper and FinData are really good. So once learning more about the Aussie economy, how do you begin to nail down the 2000 odd companies into a manageable amount to look into? Just sectors I'm interested and passionate about investing in?

Hmmm, he doesnt know TA yet, so maybe the best way is to go look at some stabler names? Rather than running first-up to some speccy that gets promoted on a forum thread, and getting his fingers burnt. Once you've got familiarity with a sector and some of the bigger players, you can move along the risk spectrum from there. That's where i was coming from...

Yes, I'm not very keen on the technical investing at all. I'm just a fundamental investor so far, just looking at companies which keep growing their earnings per share which look relatively cheap to others in the same sector.
For example, I'd look into the health sector and find a well established company with improving earning/share and a competitive advantage in the marketplace an go from there.
Keep it simple stupid is generally the rule I'm trying to follow.

Just in case some haven't seen it; the ASX hasn't opened today as yet due to technical problems. This is a big stuff up. They were working on the website yesterday.

This outage is an outrage and not a good look at all.

Offending ‘component’ identified.
System issues have delayed the opening of the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) equities market and alternative trading venue Chi-X Australia.
An ASX spokesperson said the problem stemmed from an issue with a component used to manage individual stocks.
“ASX is working to rectify the issue and open the market in an orderly manner as soon as possible," the spokesperson said.
Equities traders – including at CommSec and HarbourSide Capital - began warning customers of the issues as ASX reached its normal opening time of 10am AEST.
A Chi-X spokesperson said the ASX issues had impacted the "orderly operation" of the Chi-X market, and "accordingly the Chi-X market open this morning will be delayed".
Pre-open for equities trading on the ASX began at 11.10am, with a full opening scheduled for 11.30am AEST.

An Aussie friend of mine told me over the weekend that NZ is kicking Aussie's arse in renewable energy, internet download speeds, GDP growth and the rugby. I should feel free to add to the list.

Not the best of days - less than an hour of trading in some stocks and the ASX calling it day just after 2pm Melbourne time.
Hopefully there will have a solution for tomorrow and the days after.
Best Wishes
