Weekly, for the last 34 weeks, I have copied the NZX “Top 10 Buys” and “Top 10 Sells” from the Jarden Market Overview page into a spreadsheet to see if it tells me anything. Jarden defines the Buys as “Ranked by net value bought (total value bought less total value sold), by Jarden Direct clients, over the previous calendar week” (and vice vera for Solds). I have reversed the numbers attributed to the ranking in each week so that the most bough security (of the 10) scores 10 and the least bought scores 1, the most sold scores -10 and least sold, -1. I then keep a running total of the scores and a count of how many times a security is listed.
No shares are listed every week in these top 10’s. Some are predominantly found in the Buys and some in the Solds and many appear in either in different weeks. Over the 34 weeks, 94 different securities have appeared at least once in the top 10 Buys or Sells.
One motivation for doing this is the thought that the “average” Jarden client has similar trading interests to me and so does this show a similar pattern to my trading – answer No. So, I am not sure what to make of this data, or if it has anything meaningful to show.
I have also listed Infratil and Skellerup as they almost equally appear in the buy or sell columns over time and so end up with a near zero score.
Am I wasting my time or does anyone here see some value in this?
